Caroline Paige, former Royal Air Force navigator and author, True Colours
Caroline is a retired Royal Air Force navigator with a 35-year flying career that includes air defence fighters during the Cold War and troop helicopters in Iraq and Afghanistan. In 1999, after a life-long struggle with gender identity, she informed the RAF of her intention to transition gender. Controversially at the time, she was accepted, becoming the first transgender officer to openly serve in the UK’s Armed Forces. During the following 16 years, she proved critics wrong by winning several commendations for “exceptional service” on the frontline, and for helping to shape diversity and inclusion in the Armed Forces. Caroline now teaches tactical flying skills to European military helicopter aircrew and speaks to raise awareness of transgender lives.
